About Wispr

Wispr is an artificial intelligence research and product company building the voice interface for computing. AI can now reason, code, and act. Yet, humans still do the work of the interface. We think that’s backwards.

Our first products are Flow, which lets you speak naturally in any application, and Notetaker, which builds context across conversations. We’re building toward an interface that can perceive, understand, and take action with earned trust. That means solving hard problems across models, systems, and product - and caring about the final human experience as deeply as the technology underneath it.

We’re a small, talented team that holds strong opinions, tests them quickly, and builds technology that sparks joy. Our goal is to build the first voice interface used every day by a billion people.

About the Role

As a ML scientist at Wispr, you’ll play a crucial role in building the first capable, habit forming voice interface that scales to a billion users. Members of our technical staff are responsible for prototyping and designing new features of our voice interface, building infrastructure to handle <500ms LLM inference for millions of requests from everywhere around the world, and scaling the personalization of our speech models and LLMs. You'll be primarily responsible for ML personalization, training speech models, and using fine-tuning and RL techniques to improve LLMs.

What are we looking for?

  • PhD in machine learning or related field (neuroscience, EE, etc)

  • Strong publication track record at top conferences (ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICASSP)

  • Fluency in Python and LLM development

  • Attention to detail and eagerness to learn

  • Aptitude and clarity of thought

  • Creativity in R&D, excellence in engineering, and code velocity

Logistics

Location. About 60% of the team is in San Francisco; the rest are remote, mostly US-based.

  • If you're in SF: you'll be in the office most days - we think the best work happens in person. Most of the team is here five days a week; a few do three or four for family or commute reasons.

  • If you're remote: some roles are open to remote. We fly remote teammates to SF three to four days a month.

Visa sponsorship. We sponsor H1B, O1, EB1, L1, STEM OPT, and more. We can't guarantee sponsorship for every role, but if we make you an offer we'll make every reasonable effort, with help from our immigration law firm.

What we offer

We care deeply about the quality of our work and the people we do it with. Here's what you can expect:

  • Equity on employee-friendly terms: extended exercise windows and a mix of ISOs and RSUs.

  • 100% of health, dental, and vision premiums covered on the Anthem Blue Cross Gold PPO; 75% for dependents. (US only)

  • 401(k) with up to a 4% match. (US only)

  • Flexible time off and company holidays.

  • All meals in the office, commuter benefits, and relocation reimbursement if you're moving to SF.

  • Regular team events and off-sites.

  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave (12 for non-birthing parents). The early days with a new baby matter more than anything we're doing here.

We strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every qualification. The strongest candidates we meet rarely do, so don't exclude yourself prematurely. We're rethinking how humans interact with AI, and doing that well demands diversity of perspective and experience.

We're committed to a fair and accessible interview process. If you need any accommodations or adjustments, please let us know.
